I am trying to decide which camera to buy...the Nikon Coolpix 8800 or the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30 . I've read about both and am a little familiar with the cons of both.

Nikon 8800: SLOW

FZ30: NOISE

I don't have a trained professional eye, but would still like the best "prosumer" camera I can find. Any input here would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have used both the Nikon 8800 (which has been discontinued) and the Panasonic FZ-30 extensively. As you have stated, they both have real limitations. Instead I would go with the Fuji S-9000.

I didn't realize the Coolpix 8800 has been discontinued. Wow...it's hasn't been out long at all. Do you know why it was discontinued?

Thanks for your input. Why the Fuji S-9000 over the Panasonic DMC-FZ30?

My choice of the Fuji S-9000 over the Panasonic FZ-30 is simple. The FZ-30, with 8mp,is notorious for it excessive noise and it is limited to a maximum ISO setting of 400. On the other hand the S-9000 offers you a full 9mp, and ISO capabilities up to ISO 1600.

The Nikon 8800 was discontinued because Nikon is rumored to be designing a digial camera around the new Sony 10.3mp CMOS sensor. The new camera will also be an wide angle to mini ultrazoom, as Sony demonstrated with their R-1 model, or it could be a straight ultra zoom. Keep in mind that when the dicontinued the 8800, they also discontinued the 8400 as well. So we will just have to wait and see.
