I am updating my old Canon G2. I volunteered to take photos for our volunteer Fire Department and am having trouble deciding between the Canon Rebel XT and the Nikon D70. The fire Chief let me use his Nikon 100 one evening and it was great. I need the ability to shoot fast and day or night and all kinds of weather conditions. In the PNW we have lots of rain. I liked the Canon Rebel because it is a little smaller than the Nikon, I am more use to my G2 and having had both my thumb joints replaced sometimes smaller and lighter are better for me. But I need some advice from people who know. Thanks for any help.

If you're looking at the D70, also look at the D50. I just got the D50 and what I really like about it is the buttons and easy access to everything you want to do. Nothing is buried in hard to find menus. It's all right there, right where you want it.

Rebel XT.. .you are already used to the canon menu and system.. the XT isa superb camera with great resolution and color accuracy.. much of what you learned with the G2 can easily be carried over to the XT..

If smaller and lighter is a priority, the XT is probably the better choice. However, you're going to find the recommendations will depend on whether you talk to a Nikon or Canon shooter. Both camara's are very good and i don't think you'll go wrong either way. I do think the build quality is a little better with the D70.

Thanks to all of you who took the time to answer. I am still not sure which camera to buy, so I am going to check prices and see how far my money will go. Hope you all have a great week.
