I am very undecided which digital camera to buy! I have two in mind and would like some opinions or advice. I was recently thinking of the Nikon D70s but have recently changed my mind to Sony R1. I presently own a Minolta A1 and am not sure to go for D-Slr or a fixed lens like the Sony R1. Is the quality of the Sony pics as good as the Nikon? I like portrait and shooting outdoor sport. Please can someone giveadvice!

I don't think the Sony R-1 would work well for sports photos with its very limited zoom range.

do you think the quality of the photo's would be as good on the Sony as any other budget Dslr? Can the prints be made much bigger as it is a 10 meg CMOS? If so' how big can the prints be made whilst retaining top quality?

You don't say which lens you'll be using on the D70s.

There is a preview of the R1 over at Steve's of course ...

and there is a detailed review of the lens and camera at

http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/R1/R1A.HTM

until Steve completes his review.

My interpretation...

This is not a great sports camera. It doesn't have a big buffer and the shot-to-shot times are not very good. It's not snappy and responsive like a DSLR.

However - as far as the quality of the lens and sensor is concerned you would have to spend a LOT more money to get the same quality in a DSLR.

It's a different kind of animal to the D70s, but it's a very tempting option indeed.

Thanks for the info, I am also from South Africa but now residing in Switzerland. I have now decided on a Nikon D 50 with kit lens, paid 660 euro including SD card sandisk ultra 2.1Gig I also have an existing Nikon 28-105 D lens which I purchased 4 years ago with my F 80 Slr. This lens I prefered to the standard 28-100. I would like to know if it is compatiable with my D-50?
