what we really need is some options for what you really want it to do. There is no one best camera as they all have positive and negative aspects. For example

Canon SD450: great still, great looking video, limited video record time, cant zoom during movies.

Kodak V550. Good record time (4x more than the canon for a given card) video not as good quality. Stills not as good as canon. etc....

I think the Canon S2 IS is the best rated for movies right now.. I LOVE mine. Not sure what price it goes for out there though.

S2 is great, but its not a compact. It also suffers the same time limitaion as the other canon series due to the codec used to encode the video. The quality though, is great along with the zooming and photo capbility.

I'm real happy with my Casio Z120's movies.
I use a SanDisc "Ultra" 1 gig SD card and the Casio records for as long as there's card space and the batteries stay alive.

I also have tried a Konika/Minolta Z5 with equal set-up and results.
If you look at the K/M Z5, don't bother with the K/M Z6: K/M lowered the movie mode.

The Fuji S9000/S9500 (way above your price range) performs as above BUT NOT WITH AN XD CARD. It works fine with a CF or microdrive.
If someone offers you a free XD card for movies, RUN AWAY!

I strongly suspect that ANY camera brand that uses XD cards (even M) won't do good movies.
