I'd like to get a little closer to wildlife than my 10x zoom, but not sure how much difference a 12x would make. Appreciate your thoughts.

10x and 12x dont give an idea of focal length

10-100mm would be a 10x zoom but it wouldnt get you close to distant action

100-300mm would be 3x zoom, but would get you alot closer

so basically, you need to look at focal length you need

I felt something was missing when I posted the question, but didn't realize what it was till you responded. The comparison I was really after was the difference between so-called super-zoom digicams 10 and 12x zooms, not a DSLR or SLR lens.

Maybe I should have used the example of my Fuji S5000's 35 mm equivalent of 37 to 370 mm versus, say, the Panasonic FZ7's 36 to 430mm equivalent zoom. Would the latter get me, say, three steps closer or three yards?

Go here and drag the slider to see the difference between 370 mm and 430 mm - it's not that big a difference...the difference is more apparent at the wide angle end.

A 2x teleconverter would give you 740 mm, and would be a lot cheaper than buying a whole new camera.
