I am new here and a bit initimidated. I want to buy a large zoom digicam (10X or better) to take photos of my grandson playing soccer outdoors. IS is important. Any suggestions? I have read Steve's reviews and recommendations. Thanks

Hmm,

DSLR's are so cheap these days.

Maybe look at a Konica Minolta 5D, and attach a nice 70-200 zoom.

If you don't want a DSLR go with the FZ20 from panasonic. Great camera for outdoors with good light. 12X and 5MP.

Go DSLR if you can.

I briefly looked into the FZ5 but not the FZ20. One of the webistes I checked had a lot of negative comments about the reliability of the FZ5. Don't know about the FZ20. I will check on it. Thanks

There is also the Canon S2 IS.. I have 2 toddlers that play sports obviously.. I'm very happy with it..

But Obviously if you can afford to go DSLR, there's no comparison with a p&s camera. You will have to also take into consideration that you will be carying around more camera too.. depends on what you want.

In looking at prices, I don't think I can aford a DSLR. I hear ggod things about the S2 IS from Canon and Sony H1. I alos saw a new review by Steve on a Panansonic FZ7. I think I will focus in on one of the three. If you have any ithoughts on them please share them. Thanks

I have compared the H1 and Canon.. The S2 has better color and image stabilization. Also fit better in my hands.. The Sony also takes a special battery.. The S2 is much better in that regards, it takes AAs much cheaper and convienent in the long run.

The movie mode is best rated on the S2.. I never thought I'd use it, as I have a camcorder too.. but it's REALLY convienent and I can take it places (ie concerts) where they don't allow camcorders.

Thanks. Color is important to me. I plan to try both the S2 and H1 this week at a local store. Don't know where I can see an FZ& since it so new. Wish the S2 had a larger LCD like the H1 and FZ7. I guess there are always tradeoffs though.
