I have to say it depends how close up you want to get to the knives...

I think the D50 kit lens would do a really good job if you just wanted to fill the frame with the knife, whereas if you wanted to get in really close (like fill the frame with a head from a coin) then your going to need a macro lens which will cost alot

For general day to day use though you will be impressed with the D50, I know I am
