Here is the link:

The comment that I was referring to is right below the San Francisco night shot.

Whew, that's good - it's not the same camera!

We're talking about the FX01 not the LX1

Peri - any reason you discounted the R4 in your options... Although I cant find a review of it the actual specs seem quite nice.

I didn't know it even existed!

I found a review..

In general though I'm not a fan of very big X factors. The bigger the zoom the worse the lens is a decent rule of thumb.

So a choice between a 4x f2.8-5.6 Leica lens v an 11x f3.3-4.8 Ricoh lens seems fairly simple.

I also don't like the sound and look of a noisy and slow zoom with massive extension. Feels creepy and wrong to me. So even if I had known about it I wouldn't have shortlisted it.

I apologize to you, that was my goof. I am glad that some good news came out of it.

Have you looked at Fmoore's FX01 galleries? He really makes this camera shine...

And if you're concerned about low light shots from the FX01... look at this:

Mary,

That gallery is very convincing.

This looks like the camera for me.

The ISO200 plus f2.8 shots are fantastic at what looks very much like the kind of light levels I'll be looking for, of course it's web not print, but even the ISO1600 aren't all that bad.

This is what I'm thinking too...

I've been going back and forth between the Cannon SD series (550, 600, 700IS) and of course, the Panasonic FX01. I currently have a Panosonic FZ3 which I love, just want something more compact with higher MP.

I've looked at dpreview's shots of the FX01's 400 ISO pics vs the Cannon SD630 pics. And they're pretty much the same. I don't understand WHY the FX01 is gettingsuch a "bad rap" when it comes to noise when it's just as noisy (ISO 400 +) as MOST compacts in its class (except for the Fuji F10/11). Maybe it's because the FX01 is following a long line of noisy Pannies? Don't know. Feel like I've been out of the loop for a while since fall of 2004 - which was the last time I researched digi cams and ended up with my FZ3.

Point is, I'm no expert. Just have researched all of this an embarrassing amount of time. I think the FX01 will make a good all around compact, with great crisp shots and even some good indoor ones (FMoore's indoor shots of the girl and baby are BEAUTIFUL to my untrained eye, but I'm sure others could split hairs over how it's got "XYZ" wrong with it).

I was holding out for the Cannon SD700, but for the extra $200 it would cost, I just don't think I can justify it... especially after looking atFmoore's gallery and the fact that NONE of his shots had PPing to them. That is RIGHT up my alley. Nice clean vibrant shots right out of the camera.

The wider lense on the FX01 will come in handy for us with upcoming trips to Mexico and the beach. So if I can get all this, plus some potential 800 +ISO shots, O.I.S, with a bright LCD that gains up, 6 MP, for $287 shipped*... all in a super compact cam... I think I'm going to order one tomorrow.

Good luck with your decision...
