Hi - i'm keen to upgrade my compact point and shoot to a prosumer camera like the Canon S3. I kave always wanted a Nikon 8800, but could not afford it - however - they appear to have dropped in price sicne they were discontinued.

Does anyone know why the Nikon was discontinued? Which camera do you think would be better - the S3 or the 8800?

Thanks in advance for you assistance.

Regards,
Andrew

The Nikon 8800 came out over a year and a half ago. 8 megapixels. Stabilized. Good pictures at low ISO's. One big gripe about it was that it focused pretty slowly.

I would go with the Canon S3. I am sure it is faster. It has slightly more zoom. It will cost much less than any close out 8800 (non-refurbished) that you will find.

And what do you guys think about the Panasonic DMC-FZ30 compared to the Canon S3?

You like using button zoom? Because otherwise I wouldn't call any of button zoom cameras as prosumer.

But what kind targets you would photograph?
We're in that unfortunate situation we can't have perfect camera so all cameras are compromises, some are just better for other things than others.

Nikon got low end cash cows out.

The Nikon VR is less effective than the Canon IS, and the Coolpix 8800 seems to suffer from some visible noise issues.

The lens element on the 8800 is better than the one on the S3, but overall, the S3 wins.
