The biggest difference is the P850 has image stabilization and this is really important when shooting telephoto or low *********s. It would be an extra $60 well spent

Either camera will do the job but as Steve said the Image Stabilization can help with those long telephoto shots! You also have to remember that some people are so brand concious that they will put down most any camera that is not their own brand. Here we try not to do that! I've owned several brands that gave very good service and must say that the newer Kodak Digi-cams are very good. I use a DX6490 which is a comparable camera to the Z740 and have used a friends P850 and gotten good results with both! My daughters own a Z740, a DX7440 and a C340. My wife owns and uses a C340. All Kodaks. We love them for their ease of use and great photos!! Hope you get that camera soon and can post some photos you or your wife have taken with it!! Most of all have fun......

I traded my 740 in for the 850. I have been much happier w/ the 850.

The 850 has a lot of stuff the 740 doesn't, such as program buttons and RAW.

Thanks for all the good info.I agree about the brand bashing.I've been out shopping and trying to find the best deals. It's been a blast.maybe there is something to this camera thing.Anyway I'll update you guys and gals when I pick it up.Any thoughts from buying Kodak direct or refurbished.I'm not that cheap but money is extra goodies, memory, and batteries.Again thanks for this forum and your professional responces.

I've had good luck with refurb equipment. You often get new equipment someone had returned just because they don't like the product. But it is a crapshoot.

I wouldn't consider the Z740 considering the current price of the P850. Stabilization is effective at all zoom ranges but is especially helpful at long zoom. And you can really improve your flash photos with a $30 bounce flash attachment with the hotshoe. http://www50.shopping.com/xPC-Kodak_..._P850~S-P~OR-0
