Has anyone else noticed that digital SLRs do not have articulating screens? I take pictures above crowds and in other situations where I am facing one direction and I want to take a picture in another direction. I need to be able to tilt the screen so I can see what I am shooting.

I use a Canon PowerShot G5. It has such a screen. It is a very good camera but I am looking to improve.

Do better cameras have some sort of external attachment that would serve this purpose? Is there some digital SLR out there that I don't know about that does have an articulating screen?

Thanks ---

I am not sure what they call it. Descriptions of the G5 calls it an articulating screen. The LCD does not just lie flat against the camera but can tilt and rotate.

Thanks fot the tip. That camera does have a screen that tilts but it doesn't rotate. I often shoot in portrait orientation so I need the screen to fold out sideways also.

You don't get live preview on the screens of most SLRs (just a much clearer optical viewfinder), so having the screen rotate out is of limited use.

looks like an upgrade for you if you've got the budget. It that has a screen that moves out as you require I think (tilts 120 degrees, rotates 270 degrees), and a nice big sensor (same size as many DSLRs). That and ISOs that go up to 3200 should make for great ability in questionable light (though its probably pretty noisy up there).

Its a 5x optical zoom, starting at a fairly wide-angle 24mm - that might not have the reach you want, depending on exactly what you're doing. However, you do have a 10MP sensor, so liberal cropping is realisitc.

Best of luck!

RE: Canon S3 - Yes, it has the screen - but alas - no hot shoe!

RE: Sony R1 - Good call! That does look like a significant upgrade from what I have. I'll have to think about this one....
