A few bird photos using 10D and Sigma 50-500. I recently sold my Digital Rebel and stepped up to the 10D. While the Rebel did well, it was really lacking in some very useful features. I did not realize how much until I tried the 10D.

Those are really nice shots of the Cardinal and Chickadee! I wish we had Cardinals out here in California. Maybe we do. I don't know, lol. All I know is that bird is a beautiful red! And Chickadees are so darn cute.
Thanks for sharing. Beep Beep, Darby  |

Very beautiful! Cardinals here will never sit still long enough! At least not for me.

pbnoj... I had the same problem as you, they would not sit still. So I stood in one location for about an hour, motionless as I possibly could. The second they landed I framed them slowly and they picked up every slight movement. Luckily I was able to frame and shoot before they took off. |

Awesome photos indeed
![]() You're convincing me to buy a 50-500 instead of a 100-300 EX HSM, what aperture were you using and what focal lenght ? I also wonder, at 400, is it F/6.3 or bigger ? Cheers ! |

On the portrait I used F/9.5 and on the full body shot of the cardinal I used F/11. |

Yes, the lens lies to the camera and reports f5.6 eventhough its f6.3 Since its so close, the AF system usually works well enough. But if you were shooting near sunset or in a dark environment, you'd notice that the AF isn't what it should be.
Wow, so f5.6 starts at 100mm? That is harsh. I would have hoped it started later. Nice shots, BTW. Great detail on the head shot. Eric |

I took the plunge and also bought a 50-500, I'm quite happy with the little test I done so far. My problem right now is lack of time to go in the wild. Next Monday and Tuesday I'm off, so I'll try to bring some neat ones
