Common Kingfisher, about the size of a Sparrow. Taken abut 20 yards from a pub (interestingly the U.K.'s oldest pub, Fighting Cocks in St Albans circa 11 th century, possibly even 8th century).

Andy, that is an absolute stunner of a picture. I think I should spend more time in the pub and less time getting cold at Musselburgh. Virtue has its reward ?!!?

Truly excellent picture of a great bird.

Any chance of a pic of the pub you mention - inside and out.

I was recently in the oldest inn in the Lake District - The Farmer's Arms.

Here it is inside. Doesn't look anything outside -12th Century the oldest bit if I recall correctly. We stopped there for our 25th wedding anniversary.

I should have got a seat by the window in the pub and shot from there.... cable-release in one hand and a pint of beer in the other

Focus may have suffered though.... don't want Klaus on my case :lol:
Steve: No photos of the pub I'm afraid... I should've really.

I think there are numerous pubs claiming to be the oldest in the U.K, the Fighting Cocks is usually the one given greatest credence in the Guiness book of records.... it's still a genuine pub rather than a restaurant like most have turned into. Your place looks very cosy on a winter night!

urrrrr... do you have a picture from the pub?? (i think the story of the picture is most interesting that the pic itself... but is a great great picture!)

Splendid, but the sharpness on its head could have been a bit better. But okay its very difficult to get it right using tele.

Wonderful color. Every time the tops of this forum post (Linn, AndyBright, and others) it makes me rethink my choice to go with the steeply discounted D100. I could still change my mind, though.

Is that picture a crop/enlargement? How much? How big is that bird in reality? We get kingfisher here (near Boston, USA)... I love watching them from my Kayak catching dragonflys out of midair. But the ones we have are larger than this one.
