That isn't a very nice thing for a red-winged black bird to do!

What do you mean by "young"? I always thought (but I don't know why) that they didn't start to get that many points until after a few years. Is that true? Eric |

Yea i don't think its young cause of the many branches on the antlers.

All bucks have "fuzz" (actually called velvet) on their antlers this time of year. Velvet provides the blood supply that causes the antlers to grow... and they grow very fast. Later on, in the autumn, they'll scrape the velvet off in preparation for the rut (breeding season).
The size of the antlers is an indication of the age and general condition of a buck. Some may actually have fewer points next year as they move into old age. Points are counted on each side (except in some areas of the country). A five pointer has five on each side. One with five on one side and four on the other is usually called a "5/4" Antlers are dropped each winter and they start all over again in the spring. |
