This is the best shot of my fourth trip to the local bluebird haven. I have not seen or heard a bluebird yet. Fortunately for me I am a big fan of yellow birds. D30 w/ 300/4, stacked teleconverters, flash, monopod. My feeling is there was too much flash here. I'm still trying to learn to control the flash. But anyway it's sharp ![]() |

Wow, crisp photo. Sharp looking little fellow. Just curious, what type of distance was this?

Brooks--I'd have to guess the distance, at about 20 feet. This is not full-frame, more like 60% of the frame...and I use a flash extender too.
Goldfinches are pretty bold, and I got about 6 or 7 shots, not in a burst because of the flash. |

Nice goldfinch, Sue! Enviably close, and real sharp.
Bluebirds are fairly skittish, you may not be able to get this close to one. I tried this spring and couldn't! I think I may just get a 2x TC and take what I can get. Oh, on the flash. Looks OK here to me, not "flashed" or anything. I've had great luck with -1 flash compensation as a standard setting. Works most of the time really well on a D30 if you want just a bit of light. It looks great to me, very sharp and detailed. My bluebirds are on their third setting of the year here in NW Arkansas

Sue, I think it's a very nice shot of the Goldfinch. I think the lighting is fine and I love the natural setting.
