I happened to be in Portland, Maine last week when the vagabond Great Black Hawk appeared. It is native to Central and South America. This is the only individual ever cited in the U.S. except one in South Padre Island, Texas (could be the same one). I had my camera with a modest telephoto lens with me, and so could at least document the experience.

G'day mate
Over 100 views without any comment or feedback ![]() The bird seems comfy in the tree and not worried about the camera or you on the ground - so I hope it went on its way and survives okay Q- does the dark colouring mean it's a juvenile? ... Aussie eagles are quite dark till their 3rd year when they start to change into a chocolate brown colour Phil

Thanks for noticing and your comments, Phil.
I am not sure about the coloring. There were a bunch of avid birders around, and admittedly I am long-time casual birder. Since this hawk is not native to this region, I don't have a bird guide that covers it. The same day there was an immature eagle perched in a tree, and I got some better shots of that bird. I was only in Portland for about 46 hours, and only had a camera with me for some touristy opportunities, and this was just a chance occurrence. Elliot |

The tree is empty, it's the only one there! Feeling lonely deep inside.
