![]() ![]() Hi to all those I know...and hi to those I don't. A young Great Spotted Woodpecker, taken at 25 yards without cropping and a bit of fill-flash. Nikon 990/Swarovski AT80HD + Nikon SB24/Fresnel screen Andy B, London Digiscoped UK Birds Website [Edited on 6-13-2002 by Andybrightuk] |

Great shot Andy, but what flash is effective at 25 yards?

That's a right handsome critter! We don't have that particular species here, but his cousins have been poking holes in my barn for several years! They sure are pretty though!
Tom, Most any of the reasonably powerful external flashes, when used with a Fresnel which concentrates the flash, are helpful to even beyond 40 yards. I think Andy has some great examples on his site - definitely worth checking out... Here's a link: Link to Andy's Site |

Thanks Lin and Tom. Not too different from the N. American Downy Woodpecker. This is the most abundant Woodpecker in the U.K.
AS Lin said, a Fresnel screen will extend the range of a flashgun by some distance...but can prove tricky to use as it makes the flash a relatively narrow beam of light, so it needs to be aligned carefully with the camera so it hits the right target...bit of a nightmare with film cameras, but with digital you can check your results straight away. Cheers, Andy B |

Hmmm. I've got a 990 and a Swarovski scope but I never thought of hooking them together. Great shot BTW, especially considering the shutter lag. Do they normally have the pink rump or has this one been sitting in the rasberry patch?
Here's the American version ![]() ![]() |
