I can scare the crap out of you. Thank God for Autofocus, this guy was only about a foot long (super macro makes him(?) look bigger), but the camera was at the very limit of my reach. Does this mean I'm a chicken. YES

Nice shot. Good focus and good light.
Hey, until you can identify snakes very quickly, I think being a chicken is being smart. There are only 2 poisonous snakes in my state and I can ID them both. Never hurts to be careful. Eric |

i haven't the fainest how many there are in New Jersey...probably not many..being that there are people living in every 100 square foot area!.....lol |

how BRAVE!!!!!! with the kind of snakes here in western australia you wont get me near one unless there is glass in front of it at the zoo.

Actually no bravery involved this is a gopher snake. I've picked up ones up to 3 feet long in the summer with no problems, unfortunately I've found the smaller these guys are the easier to irritate (as you can tell from the coiling), and they are very quick when striking. Last time I moved one off a road it struck my gloved hand 3 times getting its fangs stuck on the third strike. Ick.
