Not sure but looks like a young Green Heron. He was very illusive. I just stood there watching him. I could have got closer to avoid grass in way but that would have spooked him. Lucky to get some shots. My first time with these guys.

I think you were able to get close enough to get great detail of this heron, bobbyz - it's a terrific shot. It does seem to be a juvenile Green Heron. The juveniles tend to resemble bitterns but the differences are apparent in this closeup (see field guide for detail of differences).

I've been, and still am, off travelling about. I just found a place to go online for a bit so I'm taking advantage. Nice to see some of the new stuff, especially Eric's "macro" photos. Pretty fine!
