Nankeen Night Heron, Grey Teal and Purple Swamphen

Walking through Baigup Wetlands this afternoon and spotted this Nankeen Night Heron

I could see that it was stalking something and eventually I spotted this Grey Teal family, one adult was always positioned between the chicks and the Heron.

There was a sudden commotion and a Swamphen joined the party, unlike the Heron it went straight for the Teals and and engaged in a fierce but swift battle with the adult Teals before grabbing one of their chicks.

I realise that different settings would have given better results but if I had stopped to change settings then I would not have any evidence that this took place, and bad as they are I thought it interesting to see how he Teals fight back. The Swamphen was in and out in no more than a minute.

The Heron looked unimpressed when the Swamphen appeared on the scene

and was even less impressed when the Swamphen and its victim passed close by.

G'day mate

Hells bells - I didn't realise that swamp hens were interested in chicks ... I've always thought them to be like the ducks etc. - just into vegetation for food

A good series overall though - a 'well done' from me under difficult circumstances

Thanks Phil, first time I'd seen it but had heard they take anything they can get.
A friend told me yesterday how she rescued a Swamphen chick from a drain while the adults waited nearby, once the chick was out of the water and starting to recover another Swamphen adult came along and had to be fought off by the parent birds as it tried to grab the chick.
