I like this photo more for the scene than the bird itself. While focusing on getting a shot of the sparrow I missed altogether the amazing arrangement of wire in the fence. In sheep country, ranchers often use a more closed mesh wire fence since 4 or 5-strand barbed wire is not effective in containing sheep. Over time, old fences show the effects of conflict with animals, the elements, and ongoing repairs. In general, birds actually like fences and do well because of them because of their utility for foraging and mating display.

The fairly plain and cryptic coloration of the Vesper Sparrow often keeps it well hidden in the dry grasslands and sagebrush areas.

What a great picture! I agree with you, the setting makes the picture. Thanks for the little "Fact Of Life"! I've never even heard of these little birds, but you learn something new everyday! You sure know your stuff! Thanks!
