I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year! I Just got back from vacation through California, over the Sierra and into Nevada . Stopped in Sunnyvale California to visit a friend and we took a trip out to the Sunnyvale Bay land preserve.

http://sunnyvale.ca.gov/NR/rdonlyres...ytrail2001.gif

We had a great time photographing Brown pelicans, stilts, Ruddy ducks, Grebes, Coots and a Harrier that performed for us. But the winner of the trip was the opportunity to observe and photograph a White Tailed Kite. We started the day out by walking the bay trail but had little hope of finding much wildlife due to the strong winds blowing in from the bay but were suprized by the amount of birds that braved the winds and stayed in the area. I'd noticed some seagulls hovering in the distance taking advantage of the wind to hover in place. We decided to polish or photo skills by taking flight pictures. It wasn't until we got closer that I noticed they weren't gulls but raptors hunting the grasslands below.

That's a cool looking raptor Kentand I can see how they might be confused for Gulls.

I don't guess they range into my area. Good captures.

Excellent shots KEM. How close were you able to get to the birds?

WOW Kent! The white tail Kite is a bird that I have been trying to capture for some time now. You have some excellent, excellent pictures there. I am green with envy. Well done. Looks like your trip was fun and photographically fruitful. Way to go.

Thanks for the comments Houston, Don, Jim and Steve!

Jim,

I was maybe around 40 yards from the Kite in the bush andusing myD200 with nikon 300 f4+ 1.7E II TC. This givesme ~500mm at f6. The flight shots were at a greater distance.. ~ 200yards.

Thanks again!

-Kent
