yes, hooded mergansers do flatten their crests in flight... this isn't the best shot - the light was fading, so my shutter speed wasn't what i'd want, and the bird caught me a bit off guard, but it's clear enough to see the flattened crest... 30D, Sigma at 400mm, 1/400 @ f10

Nice capture it looks and sounds like he made you pay attention real quick like. I had no idea they did that with the thingie on their head.
