Melanerpes Lewis or Woody

This is the 2nd year that I stop every few days to visit with Woody. His summer house is down by the river and only a couple of blocks off the road I use to go to the lakes.

On the way to look for a muskrat I stopped by to say hi to Woody. He seems to be doing just fine.

Another day another visit with Woody

Now my favorite of this series

For those who don't know the bird, Lewis' Woodpecker is one of the most beautiful of North American birds with its unique combination of colors which just cannot be done justice in a photograph. I don't know what kind of light is best for it, but as good as your pictures are -- and they are superb (as usual) --bright sunlight just can't do the bird justice - it is one that might be better painted than photographed. Maybe in shade with flash, or on a rare summer's cloudy day (if you ever have one over there)? I say summer, because I think they are nomadic in winter - hard birds to find and to photograph. If you have them nesting nearby, you are indeedlucky.

Nice woody. It almost has a hummingbird shape to it, but it looks alot bigger.
