Mountain Marmot from a national forest in Montana. Yellow bellied marmots prefer talus and rock slopes in high alpine areas in the mountains of the west from the Rockies to the Sierras. A mix of vegetation nearby is a must. The dens are usually dug out of the earth inbetween large rocks. They make warning sounds to alert of predators. They hibernate, so are constantly feeding to put on fat during the summer months. Audio clips of their calls:

Thanks for sharing your marmot photo and all the background information. We get the Hoary marmot in the mountains around here. They aren't easy to get near! Good job.
