I was putting up my xmas lights yesterday when I noticed something moving in the corner of my eye. I was up on a ladder and when I turned to my right there was this praying mantis crawling up the side of my house. It was 3 inches in length and it was about 2 feet from my face. After my mild heart attack ( I'm fascinated by bugs but am also creeped out by them), I ran into the house to grab my camera gear.

1) Preying Mantis

I was really psyched to have run into this "little" fellah in my side yard. Praying Mantis are very rare where I live. I have only encountered 3 in my life and the last 2 was over 20 years ago in my parents backyard when I was a kid. This is my first shot of one ever.I shot this guy with my 400mm f5.6 lens and 36mm kenko autofocus extension tube.

2) Here are some left overs from my previous outing to the sanctuary.

Black Crowned Night Heron. Looks like it had a squabble with a great egret in the marsh reeds. I heard alot of sqwauking and wing flapping, then this guy flies off.

4) Check out those chicken like feet.

4) Black Necked Stilts doing the one legged standing thing. They recently chopped down the marsh reeds in this pond so it's easier to get a clear shot of the stilts. I forgot to set the -1 exposure compensation so the whites are quite blown out.

Thanks for looking.

- Hung

I had a Praying Mantis jump on my face as a child...looked kind of like that one now that I think of it. :G Been fasinated with bugs ever since.

Great close up of the Praying Mantis. I really like the light and the detail of the 2nd Black Crowned Night Heron photo. Actually, they're all top notch.

Gee, Hung -- I don't know about that Mantis photo -- the toes on one of its feet are out of focus. You'll just have to do better in the future! :G

WOW!
