came home at lunch and heard a commotion in the back yard, lots of little tweety bits out there chirping and carrying on, so i grabbed the 40D and headed out the door. these two would never have come out with the 100-400L - at least not till it gets recalibrated! but even though i got that wretched 'error 01' message several times shooting these, the Sigma came through again...

a finch playing peekaboo in the vines... 400mm, 1/[email protected] f/8

after a bit, he left and a female moved in... 400mm, 1/125 @ f/8

this little guy popped up on a vine and gave me a nice little open-air shot...

Very nice Rocky. We have a lot of these around here right now too. They love the rotting blackberries. Probably get high off of them if they've fermented.....cheers....Don

yeah, i just have to turn the camera off and back on to clear the error, then i'm good for another few shots... anywhere from 3 to 20 before i get the error again. AF works fine, and i can make the error stop by turning off the IS, if i have good enough light...

did you ever have that problem with your canon 30d? the image quality of that sigma 80-400 os seems quite nice. would you ever just go back to using your 30d if there is a compatibility problem with the new 40d?

Pretty shots of the Finches, squirl. I have always liked the colors you get with the 80-400.

Nice shotssquirl! Have you cleaned the contacts on your lens? I shoot Nikon and had a similar problem, cleaned the contacts, and that fixed it.
