Jicarilla Wild Horses

Jicarilla Wild Horses (spooky young fellows). The Jicarilla Wild Horse Territory is located in New Mexico approximately 40 miles east of Bloomfield. The territory consists of 76,000 acres of National Forest land on the north end of the Jicarilla Ranger District. Wild horses on the Jicarilla Wild Horse Territory use this territory year round.

I figured it was time to go and see if any of the mares I saw last month had had any babies yet. No babies yet but I will go back in a couple of weeks and check again.

I decided to glass from on top of a ridge by the big rocks and I found these two young fellows. I am guessing the herd stallion ran them off cuz they are getting large enough and old enough to be competition for his lady's. These young fellows are double spooky, while I was watching even birds flying close spooked them

Great shots and series Roger. I really like #3 with the mane whipped up in the breeze/movement, gives a nice dynamic feel to it ...to bad about that shadow though.

I think I was lucky to see them much less get off a few quick bursts. They were double spooky. Thanks for the nice comment and for taking the time to look.

I had a E-mail asking about the area by the big rocks so I made this up so you can get a better idea.

Great shots Roger! My fav's are #4 and #6. I've seen wild horses up in the Okanagan Valley here in BC, and it was a treat to see them running free. They looked very happy. That was 30 years ago though, and I really don't know if they're still about...cheers...Don
