This is a California Ground Squirrel, an inhabitant of a local nature center. It and its cohorts have decimated the California Poppies and, still being hungry, this one was hard at work systematically removing the flowers from the Bllue-eyed Grasses in their demonstration garden, despite the fact that the docent on duty said " Oh, they never bother those." Live and learn. . . .

Good documentation, penolta. I am convinced there is nothing they can't or won't tear up or eat.

Thanks Kent, VP, and Flutelady for looking and commenting.

This little 8MP camera has a Leica 18X (=28-504mm) zoom plus an Exrtended Optical Zoom (not digital, but similar to in-camera cropping) to 28X with exceptional image stabilzation - rather remarkable - which lets you keep a respectful distance from the subject so as not to disturb it. The downside is that it tends to blow highlights in bright sunlight and thus requires sometimes too much pp. - dynamic range control needs work. Otherwise an incredible camera for aP&S. It also has great close-up abilities. Very light-weight and useful as a walk-around when you are not primarily out for photos. Some close-up examples are here:
