These are not great photos, but it's no often I see another bird stand up to a pushy blue jay when control of a tree is at stake. The whole thing was set off whenthe blue jay landed in a tree already occupied by an equally aggressive summer tanager. The tanager wasted no time in giving his opinion.



As the blue jay dived, the tanager rose to meet him.



The two went at it for a good two minutes, with some of the loudest, fastest flying I've seen in my trees. The result? Not that different from when we have to mediate a couple of teenagers. Each went to a different tree and loudly proclaimed his victory.

That must have been a tussle, Paul. Not a lot of difference in size. The past two springs, the Summer Tanagers have came into my yard for three days, then moved out to the fringes. Don't know why they do that.
