Some birds adapt well to human activity. A pair of Downy Woodpeckers excavated a nest cavity in a flowering peach tree next to a busily travelled walkway on alarge University campus. They foraged on nearby trees, including a grove of eucalyptus infested with boring beetles, which furnished a rich supply of plump, juicy grubs for grub for the chicks (pun intended). They raised 2 female and 4 male chicks, which apparentlythemselvesgraduatedduring one or more of the three days of greduation ceremonies when the place was swarming with graduating Seniors and their parents. I took these pictures on Memorial Day and the day after, while the campus was quiet; ceremnonies commenced the next day, Wednesday, and the birds were goneby Saturday, when I returned to try to get some additional shots.

I sat on the end of the bench in front of the tree, rested my elbows on the railing, and shot a total of 225 exposures at a distance of 8 feet during the two hours Ispent on each of the two days. It doesn't come any easier, either for watchers or photographers (except for the editing).

What a fantastic opportunity for observing nature. Terrific captures too.
If I may quote Napoleon Dynamite, "LUCKEEEEE!"

Thanks Steve - there is always an element of Luck involved in being in the right place at the right time -- or in havingthe rightsources of information! This was in a pretty public situation, though - not exactly a secret, although most passersby were oblivious to it (until they saw someone with a camera pointed in that direction).
