These aren't the greatest pics ever, but I think they are interesting. Neither of these birds have an easy time getting airborne. They literally need to run across the water and beat their wings against the water to get going. It takes quite a bit of time and space before they get in the air. In fact, as are boat was going through the water, there were dozens of them that didn't have enough space to get up so they gave up and dove right under the boat. These were taken in Witless Bay, Newfoundland, you can even see their feet in a 'running' position in some of the pics:
