1st try w/flash-hummer

I decided to take a few hours off and try this flash thing with a hummer. I used a Canon 580 EXll with a better Beamer attached and my 1Dmark 3 w/ 500 lens & a 1.4 converter for most of the shots. What a surprise when I got out the book for the flash ??? way beyond me so what the heck trial & error for me.

I was lucky I found a Rufus which is my favorite of the hummingbirds, cuz of his attitude.

Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus)

Often described as "feisty," the Rufous may have the ideal size-to-weight ratio among North American hummingbirds. This bird outflies all other species, and usually gets its way at feeders at the expense of slower, less-maneuverable hummers. The Rufous has the longest migration route of all US hummingbirds.

Fabulous experiments into a mode of photography that you are less familiar with, Roger. I would love to see the same shots without flash to see how they look. One of my favorite things about you is the "natural" attitude you have with your shooting.

These are so wonderful. I think I like the third one best because of the jewel tones you picked up in the breast. On whatever sight, your name is enough to make me take a look, and I've never been disappointed with any picture you've taken. You have such a gift (and amazing patience) with photographing wildlife. Thalnks for sharing these. Angie I.

Hi Jim, it was about a five hour project. I got two oportunities, the rest of the time I just enjoyed being outdoors rather than my office.
