the green herons are back... i was beginning to wonder, after not having seen one since May. i spotted several at the park this afternoon, but this little fellow was the only one who came close enough to let me snap his picture... all with 40D and 100-400 @ 400mm, various exposures.

you can see the green on his wings quite nicely in this one...

got a "2-fer"! dragonfly and heron! i focused on the dragonfly, mainly so it would stand out and not look like a blurry obstruction... it almost looks superimposed, but it's not...

great shots. i love green herons. i have a hard time with the brown throats. they are hard to define. that first pic really brings out the detail in the brown.

looks like you've been pretty busy Rocky!
nice shooting. I had to send my camera back for repair again so all I can do is look at others work!

Great shots! The dragonfly is a winner.

I especially like the second shot. The heron stands out from the pond and looks seaparate. That's hard to do I think. Maybe because of the lighting it worked? I have lots of shots of blue heron in a pond where the heron looks great but there is just something a bit strange about the background. It doesn't necessarily look 3D to me. I guessed that the poor, shaded lighting had to do with it.

Oh wow, that is beautiful. I live in Seattle and have been having no luck finding any of these beautiful birds to photograph. Were you actually in the city or in some outlying area? Fantastic job!
