Yes, I do have a wonderful husband. And NO, I would not hike with this lens. We have a bag on wheels the the case fits into and we wheel it unless I am using it. It and the case weigh about 17 pounds. It works very well on a tripod or monopod. I got it for less than 1/2 proce so i could not resist. The F/4 300mm Nikons have been unavailable for many months and I got tired of waiting when this came along.
