Good to see you back, Steve, Great shots. The little hawk and the Bittern are superb, although the hawk is a Merlin rather than a Kestrel (very much harder to get - a really nice catch). The two songbirds are a female American Goldfinch (the thistles are a dead giveaway - they draw Goldfinches like a magnet) and a Savannah Sparrow.
Thanks, you know something just didn't feel right about calling it a Kestrel when I posted it. The eyes were too big, the coloring wasn't right but, the thing was so little. It was just about the same size as a Kestrel. Thanks for setting the record right and for the other id's as well.
It is good to be back.
Thanks again,

steve

Wow! Excellent series Steve! A Merlin and Bittern both the same day!! I've only ever seen these 2 once. What a treat. And to catch the Merlin chowing down...great stuff!..cheers....Don

Thanks Don. Yeah, I was pretty excited to see that little raptor on the ground and clutching his kill. I was so excited, in fact, that I totally mis-identified him as a Kestrel. He was cool enough about my being there that I was even able to restart my truck and move even closer. He put up with me for about 3 minutes before he had had enough and took his lunch to a more secluded spot so he could eat in peace.

All the best,
Steve
