This was taken at Cosumnes River Preserve about 20 miles away from Sacramento, California.
I've only been to this place a few times but I never saw this type of birds before. They ususally have ducks and white swans but this is the first time I saw this type of bird.

it's a Great Blue Heron. common as dirt where i live. they're voracious predators, eat mainly fish and frogs, but will also eat snakes, small rodents, baby birds, or just about anything else they can catch and swallow. GBH's grow to over 4 feet in height, with a 6-foot wingspan, and weigh between 5 and 7 pounds.
