thanks, everyone. from what i've been reading, Ruffed Grouse (or should that be "grice"? :lol aren't very bright, and will often freeze and rely on their camouflage - which certainly does appear to be well suited for underbrush and low scrub - to keep them invisible, even when approached within just a few yards. this one didn't twitch a feather as i drove by, turned and came back, but when i turned back to my original direction and drove slowly by on the same side of the road again, it flew off into the bushes...
