spotted this little lady on the way home from Baker Lake yesterday. she's a bit outside her normal range - the book i have says spruce grouse are rare west of the mountains here. she was standing alongside the road, not moving, and even when i stopped 50 yards past her, turned around and came back for a closer look, she stayed put. i pulled over on the opposite shoulder and took a few shots out the window with my 40D and 400mm, 1/50 @ f/5.6...

Beautiful Rocky! I was told by a birder that Grouse are pretty low on the IQ chart, and are generally easy to approach. Tough thing is trying to spot one with all that camouflage. I saw a Blue Grouse a couple of years ago, but not since. Tough to spot...cheers...Don

yeah, that's the impression i got too... they aren't too bright, but can be pretty hard to see. if this one hadn't been standing right beside the road, i'd never have seen her... especially at 50 mph! i think she may be a ruffed grouse, from what a couple of birders have told me...

thanks, Roger! i was pretty pleased myself considering the shutter speed... kind of a "snap" shot, from an idling Jeep, didn't really have a chance to mess with settings, so i just aimed and hoped the IS would come through for me! :G

Very nice shot, and at 1/50sec, the IS worked for you there. I think it is a Ruffed Grouse like this one. I am no bird expert but I do know this one is a Ruffed Grousee.

Well, the Ruffed Grouse is the only grouse with a crest, so there is no doubt that is what it is.

Couldn't get a better picture of one, either. 8)

That's as fine a capture of a RG as I've seen, Rocky. I'm glad it hung around long enough for you to go back and "shoot" it. In my neck of the woods they are extremely skitish. Cheers, Dan
