Default OMG! a headless woodpecker!

not really, but it sure looks that way! or perhaps like one of those cartoon characters who pulls his head down inside his body to avoid some catastrophe. in reality, of course, this red-breasted sapsucker is preening, and its head is merely bent around behind its body, but the illusion is entertaining... 40D. 400mm, 1/800 @ f/8

You sure about that?

Actually bird's necks have quite a bit of flexibility to allow them to reach hard to get at places - it helps when they have no hands!

Cool catch!

Nice reflexes on catching this one. The red feathers at the neck sure add to the illusion!
