Default Male Mallard Duck

This is why I carry my camera everywhere I go. Just hopping out of the car in the parking lot at work, which happens to face the river, and this proud fellow was sitting on a rock.

Snapped off a few frames as I walked over, this one was the winner of the group:

He didn't seem overly impressed with my advance and made quite a quack about it as he slipped into the water:

After he'd gotten put a bit of distance in, he seemed to relax a bit:

ISO 200, Aperture priority f8, Sigma 70-200 @ 200mm hand-held (shutters ended up being 1/500s). Images straight out of camera and resized. No crop. Originals available if anyone wants to edit.

Edit: I realized that the images needed slight sharpening due to the resize, images have been updated.

Great shots...looks like the Sun was reflecting off the bird...really caught the iridescence of that Drake's feathers.

All very nice...but my favorites are #1 and # 2.

Thanks everyone!

It's the Red River by the way, which is probably why the water looks so (and is) so murky. The water levels have only recently started to drop but there's still a lot of silt being carried along.

I'm so far very impressed with the sharpness of this lens, even when zoomed right out to its limit.
