Default Kermits little brother

Not sure what the deal is with the 5th leg. It even has all the toes.

This is a developmental anomaly - something went wrong in the embryo, resulting in the duplication of cells in one of the limb buds from which the legs develop. It is rare, but not unique. With all the pollution in our lakes and rivers, such things are occurring with increasing frequency..

It may be the result of a toxin from a fungus infection. Very worrisome; a lot of frog species are going extinct right now. Having no protective barrier on their skins, they are very sensitive to the environment.

A bit of a shock and sad to see the little fellow with this abnormality.

I'm not a biologist, I wonder if the third back leg will affect the frog in life? Will it make him slower, less able to move away from predators, less able to capture food ?

I would imagine this third leg doesn't function, probably is dragged around ?

I've seen pictures of amphibians from other areas....misshapen in this way. So far I haven't seen any amphibians here in the Canadian Prairies affected in this manner...so I'm hoping that this is indicative of a healthy climate.
