Default Birds in Flight--Variety at the Fish Hatchery

With the beginning of the change of the seasons, the local fish hatchery is attracting a lot of business from the avian commuters, and giving me a bunch of opportunities to shoot birds in flight. Light conditions have been terrible the last two days...heavy overcast and a featureless gray sky...but the birds have been plentiful. Out in force were the Great Egrets

The egrets and Great Blue Herons are year-round hatchery residents, despite the efforts of state Game and Fish commission biologist to shoo them away

Each of the last two days I've been able to catch an osprey showing off his lunch.

I didn't think I was going to see an osprey today, but I started to get in my SUV and one came rushing to show me his catch before I drove away

I suspect he was bragging, rather than offering to share. Yesterday, I was even privileged to see a juvenile bald eagle hunting for dinner.

We don't get many gulls in this part of Arkansas, but this first-year ring billed knew where the food was.

All of these shots are taken with the Pentax K-7, and the more I use this camera, the more impressed I am with it. Two of the main complaints against previous Pentax cameras were slow focus speed and limited frame rate. It would appear Pentax has gone a long way toward fixing both. Witness this shot of a killdeer in flight.
