Default Attack!!!!

Rufous Hummingbirds are pretty ferocious around feeders. Here's an immature male attacking an adult on feeder. 1D, 200mm f2.8.

What a shot Christie! The hummers are quite agressive here also but I"ve never seen them act like this.

Thanks, all. Rufous are very aggressive and if there's one by itself, it will dominate a feeder, driving everything else away. But if there's a bunch of rufous, they do a fair amount of fighting. There happened to be a huge number of hummers here (going through more than a gallon of sugar water a day) and the competition for space was spirited to say the least.

Thanks, Ward. I couldn't believe my eyes. I got a series of shots of the attack, contact was made a second time. But it didn't seem to bother the adult at all. Then I noticed quite frequently they would tap each other from behind so they would get a chance at the feeder.

Wow, super shot Christie. They are mean little things. I once saw a male attacking a female who must have come from nest and very hungrey. He pecked her and buzzed her and when that didnt work he got on the perch and pushed her off. A neighbor told me he saw two males knock each other out fighting once.

SUPER SHOT!!!! I think the little guy thinks he is a Bird-of-Pray or something. I have seen this behavior before, but have never been able to get a shot of it. BTW what shutter speed where you using?
