Default Gull vs. Osprey

I was fishing in my boat this past summer, in an area where it is fairly common to see osprey flying by. I spotted this one at a distance but I found it odd that something seemed to be chasing it. As it drew nearer, the scene resolved itself and to my amazement , I found this ring billed gull chasing the opsrey all over the sky, giving vocal evidence of its discontent. Here are three photos of the fly-by. Not something I've ever seen before. Cheers, Dan

Nice catch is right - not something you see every day! Do Ring-bills nest around your lake? If so, it might have been defending. Since the Osprey isn't carrying anything the gull could try to steal, that is the only explanation I can come up with offhand.

Haven't seen you around for a while - welcome back.

Thanks guys - I was lucky to be at the right place at the right time.

Penolta: your thinking may be right. I recall seeing a few gulls resting on the upper branches of some tall trees on a couple of small islands that I passed through a few minutes before I saw the gull chasing the osprey.

Thanks for the welcome back. Cheers, Dan

Great photos! So glad you were in the right place at the right time, with the right equipment (and with lots of talent & skill too!)
