Default Mountain Boomer

Gray Squirrels are our common squirrels here in Northeast Tennessee. But up in the mountains we enjoy their small, feisty cousins, the Red Squirrels. They are so full of energy (and voice), that many folks call them Mountain Boomers!

Spotted one yesterday on a hike up to Ramsey Cascades. He was very inquisitive about the group of hikers (or maybe about our trail snacks), and stayed long enough for several photos.

Hope you enjoy them!

Great Boomer pics! When my son was younger and living at home, we used to come to Gatlinburg every year and hike all the trails in the area. Met a retired park ranger(?) by the name of Herb Clabo on one of the trails. He was still telling people about the flora and fauna in the area. Very interesting man. He invited us up to his house for "boomer and biscuits", said nobody did them better than his wife. That was the first time I had ever heard them called by that name. Very nice pics, and pleasant memory...

Nice shooting, Mole. Excellent light quality really brings out the rust colouration on those little guys. Well done. Dan

Robert - Thanks for the kind words and the great story. I don't know Mr. Clabo, but notice that he is a guest speaker at a special event in Pigeon Forge in a few weeks called Wilderness Wildlife Week. I'll be leading a few hikes for them that week - will be sure to look him up!

Roger - Thanks!

Smac - Indeed - those wide eyes helped him keep an eye on us "nutty" hikers (also great for watching for his many predators...)

Fishguy - Thanks for the kind and specific comments!

Flutelady - glad you enjoyed them - thanks!
