Default Juvenile Black Crown Heron

Correction American Bittern, not heron

We went to the Circle B Bar Nature preserve yesterday for the first time in almost a year. Weather was perfect, 73 and partly cloudy. We were out there for 4 & 1/2 hours, managed to get pretty sunburned to boot! I got a few shoots of a few birds I haven't gotten before. One was this
American Bittern. he let me open my camp chair and set up about 10 ft from him while he posed for about 20 minuets! He was pretty well camouflaged and I almost walked right by him. A lot of others did too. They would see me sitting there and and ask what I was shooting. Then feel pretty silly after I pointed out the Bittern.

Don't know what he saw here but, he made a jab at it. before moving on.

Hope you enjoyed.

GW, it is really giving you the once over - maybe trying to decide if you are really asleep. With all that posing, it must have wanted to make sure you got a good enough look to make sure you knew it really wasn't one of those hated Night Herons, but an American Bittern! It is rare to catch one that much out in the open.

Really good shots - I especially like #3.

Default American Bittern

I took similiar photographs at Quiverna National Wildlife Refugee in Kansas last Fall, and I thought they were American Bittern. Was I wrong. My photos are not near as good as yours.

Thanks for the complements...
Sorry for the mix up guys!
I made a correction yesterday but apparently failed to hit the submit button. Anyway I now stand corrected.

Thank you very much Dan. these are all "as shot " so I can crop any way you think would improve them.

Very nice GW, around here (in summer) those birds are extremely hard to find that much out in the open, not to mention they have pretty good camo that makes them look like reeds.
