Default Barnacle Geese With Pulli - Sixteen of them :-)

(No, it's not Canade Geese)

Sixteen including the pulli. I was a lucky man that day. Next day they were all gone

Three pulli in the background. Except size there is no differences between male and female. Not that I know of anyhow. My guess - a male to the right and left and a female in the middle, closest to the camera. They are guarding the pulli

No, I don't go there - anthropomorphizing. This is Northern Europe - not Disneyland

They can extend and detract(?) their throats extensively so the grade of extendedness can't be a basis for determining whether it's a male (drake?) or a female (duck?)

Guess: female. Yes, it does matter

flutelady,

Thank you for viewing and commenting. Actually the Canada Geese opened up the biotopes for the Barnacles, which are native over here

Nicely photographed.

You know of course that these birds occupy a special place in the history of Ornithology. Frederick the Great (Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and author of the first "textbook" of Ornithology, de arte venandi cum Avibus) found the Arctic breeding grounds of the Barnacle Goose, thereby disproving the myth that they came into being hanging by their beaks from trees (barnacles found on driftwood were thought to be remnants of their attachment, which is how they got their name); at the same time he disproved Aristotle's Theory of Transformation of Species by showing that birds were migratory (Aristotle had a limited view of the world in his time and had observed the change in birds with the seasons and thought that they changed form).
