Default Interesting birds in the LA arboretum

Found this doode in the LA arboretum. He just looks so lonely.

It's a cute little heron. Looks like a Black Crowned Night Heron to me. We get them on occasion around here (near Boston, MA.) I haven't seen them here in several years, though. There was a nesting pair back then, but I don't know what happened. I like them.

It's a nice picture. You should probably have reduced the exposure a bit (the breast/neck is a touch overexposed) and it looks just a little out of focus. But it's a nice picture. Looks like you got fairly close.

Thanks for the comments eric. The picture was actually cropped quite a bit so I guess thats why it wasnt clearly focused well. I didn't want to scare him. I'll keep the overexposure point in mind next time. Thanks once again.

Metering white is hard. The camera will treat it like grey. This will cause everything to be over exposed. If you metered off the heron's neck then that is probably the problem. I've tried to get many pictures of Greater Egrets (all white) and I still rarely get it right.

Good luck, and have fun taking more pictures. They are usually rather skiddish birds, so you were probably right to keep your distance.

Even though it's slightly out of focus, I still really like this photo. We've probably all felt like that at one time or another, and therefore, it speaks.
