That's cool capture. But it looks more like an Eastern Red-tailed Hawk to me. I say that only because the tail feathers look too short for a Red-shouldered hawk and their red. Just my opinion, you obviously had a better look than I.
Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas,
Steve

You might be right - some hawks species are hard to tell apart for my old eyes. We've had a family of red shoulders nest here for the past years.

Maybe this crop can better ID it.

Here's the one that usually shows up in my yard.

I can see a difference.

Both are really nice shots. That top one is definitely an Eastern Red Tail. You're right about the bottom one being a Red-shouldered hawk.... You have cool neighbors. BTW, I know what you mean about the old eyes.

Hi Clint,
No 3 for me, love the glowing highlights for a slightly dreamy feel.

I've really enjoyed watching them build their nests and raise the chicks. They often catch a frog from my small ponds. Sometimes they even catch a goldfish if they sun themselves too close to the surface.

Thanks for the proper ID I thought he looked a bit bigger than the red shoulders but it just didn't click since I am so used the seeing the others frequent the yard.
